Windfarm Nij Hiddum-Houw supplies first renewable energy

Wind farm Nij Hiddum-Houw, at the north end of the Afsluitdijk in the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân, has produced renewable energy for the first time. The first of the nine turbines is ready and will be tested in the coming period. The power generated during this phase will already be fed directly into the electricity grid.  

In May, the first 4.65 MW turbine was up and running. During the past period it was fitted with the necessary cables and control systems. When the turbines are ready, they will be extensively tested. The wind turbines will already be producing energy, but not yet at full capacity. During the test phase they will slowly be scaled up to full production. The renewable energy generated by the wind turbines during the test runs is supplied directly to the electricity grid. This makes the first renewable electricity from this new wind farm a reality.   

Project Manager Willem van Dongen on this milestone: “This is an important moment for the project and for us as an energy company that wants to make fossil-free living possible. This is ultimately what we do it for: the years of preparation, it’s all about being able to produce sustainable electricity. In the coming weeks we will continue with the construction and installation of the remaining wind turbines and we expect all nine wind turbines to be fully operational by the end of this year.” 

About Windfarm Nij Hiddum-Houw

At Windfarm Nij Hiddum-Houw, sixteen old wind turbines are being replaced by nine more powerful ones. Four of the nine wind turbines will be owned by Vattenfall, the other five by Gooyum-Houw BV, a joint venture involving 45 private individuals and businesses from the area. This means that the majority of the park will be locally owned. With an installed capacity of almost 42 MW, the 9 Enercon wind turbines produce 160,000 MWh per year. The power is available to people and businesses, but the production corresponds to the amount of power used by 46,000 households annually.
