Many parties involved \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\nWhat does it take to get this done, in terms of technology and regulations? Maaike Sickler, project engineer at Ventolines and closely involved in this project for the past three years, explains. ‘Many parties are involved and necessary to achieve this’, says Sickler. ‘When we first began, no regulations were yet in place for turning off wind turbine lights. Furthermore, several permits are needed, such as a frequency permit, a building permit and an amendment to the environmental permit.’\u00a0<\/p>\n
Web of stakeholders\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\nSickler: ‘We formed a comprehensive network of stakeholders with whom we collaborated towards this objective. A power connection was needed, for instance, and a foundation for the radar – for this we worked with civil subcontractor Dura Vermeer Jansma. For the radar technology, we worked with Danish supplier Terma. We had a specialist from Ventolines in the team on SCADA and wind farm communications. The turbines are from Siemens Renewable Energy, but the lighting comes from subcontractor Orga \/ Sabik. Our specialists worked with all these suppliers to ensure that the Terma aviation radar relays signals to the Orga lighting of the turbines via the SCADA system.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
Regulation and safety\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\nRegulatory and safety requirements also required many parties before the lights could be switched off. Sickler: ‘We were in talks with the Inspectorate for the Environment and Transport (ILT) and the Dutch Authority for Digital Infrastructure for a long time. Safety is paramount. We worked with the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) to draw up the flight plan and carry out flight tests. This ensures that all systems interact reliably.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
Sickler: ‘With Rijkswaterstaat, we ensured that the dike on which the radar was to be placed would not be negatively impacted. After all, for the foundation we had to work in the dike and we had to be able to guarantee dike safety at all times. We discussed the lighting plan with the municipality. It helps that we already had good relationships with these parties, as we also had the development and construction of Windpark Frysl\u00e2n under our belt.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

Maintaining dialogue\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\nUp until the final weeks before implementation of the radar, it was uncertain whether it would succeed. For years, we maintained dialogue with all parties. We kept coming up with new proposals and looking for ways to make the result for local residents even better.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Minimising light duration\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\nMaaike Sickler: \u2018Initially, for instance, the lights had to stay on for quite a long time after an aircraft had left the warning zone. Longer than we considered necessary for aviation safety. So we sat down with ILT to reduce that time. That had to be adjusted in the information sheet, which contains the regulations you have to comply with if you want to use radar detection for wind farms. So we really go above and beyond to reduce the impact on the surrounding area as much as possible. If I lived near a wind farm, I wouldn’t want to see red lights all the time either.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
Finding solutions where there don’t seem to be any\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\nThat tenacity is characteristic of Ventolines, says Maaike Sickler: We are a company that thinks: it doesn’t exist yet, so let’s see if it can be done, rather than waiting until the regulations are changed. Annelot Broerze is pursuing her master\u2019s degree in Applied Physics at TU Delft. Renewable energy is one of her topics of interest. Because of the broad background of her studies, she consciously chose an internship in a company in the energy sector. Annelot wanted to discover what the structure within such a company is like and what role she could play in it.<\/p>
Was there a specific reason for you to do an internship at Ventolines?<\/strong><\/h3>\"Yes, it was a conscious choice. I have a technical background, but I want to work on something broader than the technical perspective. I like the idea of building a bridge between engineering and society. That is what characterizes Ventolines since they do not only possess technical knowledge but also commercial, legal and political expertise.\"<\/p>
What was your first impression?<\/strong><\/h3>\u201cRight when I came in, I met people working on different solutions (wind, solar, and battery storage). I enjoyed learning more about that. Every week at the team meeting, I heard updates on all projects. I could also easily find my way to people with specific knowledge and ask them any questions I had. It was nice to contribute to a way of working that evaluates technical innovations against real-world demand. It was also valuable to discuss these topics with colleagues and centralize knowledge.\u201d<\/p>
Can you tell us a bit more about your internship assignment?<\/strong><\/h3>\"My assignment focused on solar energy and broadening the knowledge in this field. Ventolines was keen to develop new knowledge and bundle available expertise to more efficiently evaluate and optimize solar farm designs for technical, political, and economic requirements. The aim was to find a methodology and the tools to critically examine whether a project design meets the set requirements and how it can be optimized.\"<\/p>
Which results has the internship concretely produced?<\/strong><\/h3>\"I am happy to receive acknowledgement from my colleagues that the results of my assignment will contribute to the efficiency of developing future projects. It is clearly visible that things really get off the ground through Ventolines' work. The ideas are not only well thought through, but also actually being implemented. That realization has come closer for me. I do not rule out eventually seeking my future employment in this sector.\" To put my gained knowledge about solar energy directly into practice and learn more about all facets of renewable energy project development, I will be working part-time at Ventolines during my graduation year at the university. It is great fun to stay involved with Ventolines, the projects and colleagues to make an even larger impact!\u201d<\/p>
How do you reflect on your internship?<\/strong><\/h3>\u201cI have discovered that I find the consulting side important in my work, not just pure engineering. The reason is that I find the social aspects especially important. My studies are quite theoretical, and things are just much more practical within a company. The internship has well fulfilled my ambition to make a positive impact on society.\u201d<\/p>
