EIGEN – Energy Hubs
About this project
The EIGEN project is a unique knowledge-sharing initiative focused on the development and validation of a blueprint for Energy Hubs at industrial estates. These hubs offer innovative solutions for more efficient use of grid capacity by integrating large-scale renewable energy generation, such as wind and solar power. The project is a collaboration between 16 parties, each with their own expertise, working together to explore how these hubs can help alleviate grid congestion in the Netherlands. The project runs until 2025.
Energy Hubs are locations where renewable energy sources, consumers, and grid infrastructure are combined to promote the integration of sustainable energy. Renewable energy generation is weather-dependent, leading to unpredictable fluctuations in supply. By sharing infrastructure within an Energy Hub, fluctuations in both supply and demand can be better managed. This results in a more stable energy supply and a more efficient use of available grid capacity.
A solution for grid congestion and efficiency in the energy transition
The Netherlands is currently facing significant grid congestion issues, which are expected to persist in the future. By establishing Energy Hubs, grid capacity can be used much more efficiently, helping to prevent or reduce grid congestion. The EIGEN project plays a key role in the energy transition by focusing on knowledge-sharing regarding the development of Energy Hubs.
The project offers solutions that are not only technically innovative but also legally and organizationally innovative. By bringing together various parties and developing new collaboration models, EIGEN lays the groundwork for the future roll-out of such hubs across the country.
The role of Ventolines
Our experts provide an essential contribution in the legal and procurement areas. We research and collaborate on the legal aspects of setting up an Energy Hub. Additionally, we assist in developing a framework that can serve as a guideline for implementation in future projects. Our research and accompanying reports cover four topics:
1. Energy trading
2. Sharing of grid connections
3. Necessary government permits
4. Regulation of privacy and security
Although Ventolines is not directly involved in the actual deployment of the hubs, our knowledge and expertise contribute to the success of this project. By working closely with the various partners in EIGEN, we help create system solutions that can make the energy market more sustainable and efficient in the long term.
