About this project
Wind farm Fryslân is being built in the IJsselmeer by contractor consortium Zuiderzeewind. The wind farm consists of 89 turbines of 4.3 megawatts (MW). On an annual basis, WPF produces about 1.5 terawatt hours (1,500,000 megawatt hours). This is approximately 1.2% of Dutch electricity consumption and corresponds to the consumption of around 500,000 households. Windpark Fryslân is the world’s largest wind farm in an inland waterway. The wind farm will be operational in 2021.
Economic return to the region
The province will reinforce its promise of a wind farm ‘fan en foar Fryslân’ by investing a few tons of the profit every year in sustainable initiatives in the whole of Fryslân. This way a new sustainable return is generated and a chain of sustainable investments is created in the region. In addition, the province invests one third of the proceeds of its participation in the wind farm in projects in the Frisian IJsselmeer region. In addition to reinvesting the return, bonds will be issued once the wind farm is operational. In this way the province is giving something back to the inhabitants of Fryslân and something extra to the people living in the neighbourhood of the wind farm.
For a period of 20 years, Windpark Fryslân’s environment fund will receive over 720,000 euros annually for projects along the IJsselmeer coast in the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân. The fund aims to support the preservation, improvement, renewal and promotion of nature, living environment, tourism, recreation, culture and heritage.
