Wind farm

Block Island

About this project

Block Island Wind Farm is the first offshore wind farm in the United States. The park comprises five wind turbines of 6 MW each and is situated along the East Coast, about 5 km southeast of Block Island in the state of Rhode Island. Block Island Wind Farm began operation in 2016.

Ventolines was asked to supervise the installation of the five wind turbines and to advise on asset management. The developer Deepwater Wind (DWW) chose to work with Ventolines because of the specific hands-on experience with (offshore) wind projects, which is still unavailable in the United States.

On behalf of Ventolines, Albert Ploeg is part of the DWW project team, and was responsible for the technical preparation of the construction of the wind turbines. Albert: “The real action has taken place in August, when we started the installation of the turbines. I managed a number of offshore representatives from Deepwater Wind, monitored whether the work was being carried out safely, properly and on schedule, and acted as the link between the DWW project team and the offshore construction vessels”.
